The military offensive against the province of Daraa continues. Russian air raids ceased on June 29, 2018; the staring date of negotiations between the Government of Syria (GoS), its Russian ally and opposition armed groups. GoS and its allied militias have seized more than half of the Daraa eastern countryside. Negotiations are still ongoing between the Russians and the opposition delegation on the terms of a cease-fire. However, there is a fragile cessation of hostilities on several fronts in the province.

Humanitarian situation

  • Large numbers of IDPs are still scattered between the western countryside, the Jordanian borders and the free zone. The number is estimated at 100,000 IDPs.
  • Several deaths of children have been documented in the area as a result of scorpion bites.
  • Several shipments of humanitarian aid sent by people from Jordan have been granted access, following the launch of a civil campaign entitled “Open the border…We will share our bread”.
  • A shooting incident was documented, as the Jordanian army shoot in the air to try to expel IDPs who approached the border fence.
  • The Jordanian government has allowed critical medical conditions to be received for treatment in the Jordanian hospitals.
  • The health and living conditions of the IDPs are very dire, in the absence of an effective response from international organizations.

The Syrian Civic Platform calls on the international community to exert pressure to deal with civilians as neutral from the conflict. It also calls on relief organizations to take prompt actions to relieve the suffering of the displaced as well as the population, with particular focus on providing tents, water and medical supplies.
